White bread price up in Georgia

White bread price up in Georgia

The price of white bread has increased by 10 tetries in Georgia, while the price is up by 20 terries for Georgian bread - Shoti.

Georgian Bread Bakers Association Malkhaz Dolidze says that the increase in the price of raw materials and transportation expenses pushed for the increase.

He said that the price for one sack of flour currently stands at 73 GEL in Georgia, while under the subsidy programme the cost of one sack of flour was 53 GEL.

The programme came into force on December 1 and ended on March 31 in 2021.

The budget for the subsidy programme was 10 million GEL.

Dolidze told Front News that the price for one tonne of wheat has increased to 300 USD on the international market and it happened before the October 2 municipal elections in Georgia.

However, he says that bread producers have increased the price only after the elections and that ‘there was no role of the government in it, it was bread producers goodwill.’

Golidze says that bread producers were forced to increase the price because they had no other way due to the growth of the price in raw materials.

“There are elections all the time in Georgia and what should they have done?,” Dolidze says.

He stated that the subsidy also sparked controversies because some bread producers received the aid, while others did not.

Dolidze says that if the international price for one tonne of wheat does not change, further increase in bread price is unlikely in the near future.
