46 detained at UNM rallies in Tbilisi, demanding release of Saakashvili

Georgian police have administratively detained 46 demonstrators at the United National Movement (UNM) opposition rallies in Tbilisi earlier today for ‘their attempt to block entrances of administrative buildings and disobedience to police.’

The demonstrators at the buildings of State Security Service and the Ministries of Health and Justice, were demanding the transfer of former president, Mikheil Saakashvili, to a civil clinic from a prison hospital, his release from prison and the annulment of the recent municipal election results.

The Georgian Interior Ministry has called upon the opposition not to violate the law on assembly and manifestation.

The UNM claims they will continue the rallies until all their demands are fulfilled.

The party is now holding its fourth rally today at the building of Tbilisi City Court, where Saakashvili’s trial is taking place for the 2007 opposition rally dispersal and illegal seizure of property of businessman Badri Patarkatsishvili.

Saakashvili was convicted by Georgian court in absentia in 2018 on two counts of abuse of power and was sentenced to six years in prison.

He is  now facing five additional charges, including illegal seizure of property, embezzlement, illegal rally dispersal, and illegal border crossing.
