Bregadze: Georgia has no obligation to allow Ukrainian public advocate in prison to see Saakashvili

Georgian Justice Minister Rati Bregadze  says that Georgia has ‘neither obliged, nor there is the necessity’  to allow Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmyla Denisova see arrested former president Mikheil Saakashvili in a prison hospital. Currently Saakashvili is a citizen of Ukraine, chairing the Executive Committee of the Ukrainian National Reforms Council.

Denisova wished to see him today in Gldani No.18 prison hospital. However, she was denied entry.

Bregadze says that the Georgian government is caring about the health of the former president who is on hunger strike, and there is no need for additional visits for him by unauthorized individuals. He said that Denisova will receive an official response for the refusal.

Bregadze stated that Saakashvili has received more than 200 visits since his arrest on October 1, noting that during her previous visit to Saakashvili at the end of October, Denisova spread ‘biased information,’ without hearing the  Georgian government position.

Ruling party MP Gia Volski says that the Ukrainian ombudsperson and other representatives of Ukraine are being denied to see Saakashvili because they aim to cause further tension.

Saakashvili’s lawyers, however, claim that Denisova and others are denied to see Saakashvili to ‘hide the poor conditions of the former president in prison.’ The former president says he returned to Georgia after eight years in political exile to remove the Georgian Dream from power.

Saakashvili has been on hunger strike for 47 days, saying that he is a political prisoner.
