European Council President Charles Michel says that Georgia should bring fundamental, planned reforms to the end. Otherwise, ‘this may risk progress in other fields.’
Speaking at an Eastern Partnership (EaP) Civil Forum in Brussels earlier today, Michel also said that the regional cooperation between the EaP member states, including between Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova, is important to strengthen ties and push their European integration.
He also said that ‘if we need stability, welfare and peace, we should work with neighbours.’
The Georgian PM is scheduled to meet with Michel today.
Michel was the initiator of the April 2021 EU-mediated agreement which proposed large-scale electoral and judiciary reforms in Georgia.
The agreement resolved almost a six-month election related political crisis in Georgia which began after the 2020 parliamentary elections.
However, the ruling Georgian Dream party withdrew from the agreement back in July ‘as the largest opposition party, the United National Movement, refused to join the agreement.’
The rGeorgian government claims that major steps have already been taken for better judiciary and an electoral system, promising the reforms will be brought to an end.
