Liza Yasko: if Georgia doesn’t need Saakashvili, Ukraine needs him

Girlfriend of Georgia’s former president Mikheil Saakashvili, Ukrainian MP Liza Yasko says that if Georgia does not need the former president, Ukraine needs him and ‘return him to Ukraine.’

Saakashvili is a citizen of Ukraine and chaired the executive committee of the Ukrainian National Reforms Council before his arrest in Tbilisi on October 1, after eight years in political exile.

Yasko, who saw Saakashvili in Gori military hospital earlier today, told journalists that the current Georgian state leadership wishes Saakashvili’s death or his imprisonment for many years.

She also stated that the former president does not feel good.

Saakashvili was convicted in absentia in Georgia back in 2018 for abuse of power and was sentenced to six years in prison.

He has also been charged with five other offences.

Saakashvili suspended his 50-day hunger strike on November 19 after he was transferred to Gori military hospital.

He says that he has plans to remove the Georgian Dream from power.  Saakashvili announced the creation of a 'new family' with Yasko shortly after his arrest, via a video which was recorded in Ukraine before his return to Georgia.  Saakashvili until now has been officially married to  Sandra Roelofs.

The couple got married in 1993 in New York. An official  announcement about their divorce has not been made yet.

Roelofs said that she had no knowledge of Saakashvili’s relationship with Yasko.
