Armenian president resigns, citing lack of power

Armenian President Armen Sarkisian aged  69 has resigned, citing a lack of power to make any influence on the current ‘political crisis’ in the country.

"The president does not have the necessary tools to influence the fundamental processes of domestic and foreign policy in the current difficult period for the country and the nation," Sarkisian noted in an official statement.

He claimed that the decision was logical, not emotional.

Sarkisian has been critical of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian, particularly following a six-week war with Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region that ended with a Russian-brokered peace agreement.
