Opposition MP calls Georgia’s FM “most incompetent” in “historic moment” for EU relations

Opposition MP from Lelo, former leader of the United National Movement party, Salome Samadashvili has called the country’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili “the most incompetent” in the “histiric period” when Georgia offilially applied for EU membership.

Samadashvili claimed that she was unable to hear “anything crucial” on Georgia’s EU integration prospects from the FM during his speech in parliament on Friday.

“You are newly appointed to this post and I think we were all surprised. The country could not have had an incompetent Minister of Foreign Affairs [like you] when the fate of our country is being decided in the foreign field,” Samadashvili said.

“We have not heard a single sentence from you which would have expressed a political support for Georgia’s application for EU membership,” Samadashvili added.

She asked the FM whether the EU was ready to grant the candidate country status to Georgia “under the Georgian Dream authorities.”

“The Foreign Minister came to parliament and he forgot to say that the European Parliament has already passed a resolution in support of both Ukraine and Moldova's candidacy, and that the European Parliament has made a political statement in support of both countries' bid to join the EU. Where is the resolution supporting Georgia? Why is not such a resolution even included in the European Parliament's agenda?” Samadashvili asked.

Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova are expecting the EU response on the candidate country status next month.
