Ambassador Degnan: US Georgia’s greatest friend, anti-Western moves serve narrow political interests

Distancing Georgia from its natural allies serves only narrow interests and not the Georgian people. Georgia does not have a bigger than the US, United States’ Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan has told Voice of America following the allegations by former MPs of the ruling party that the Ambassador, “reportedly, on behalf of the US authorities” was trying to drag Georgia into Russia’s war in Ukraine and that Degnan is interfering in the Georgian judiciary.

She suggested that “it is not clear why some politicians are trying to create division and conflict between America and Georgia at such a critical time.

"As a revanchist Russia sows chaos and destruction, Georgia and its partners should work together more than ever to ensure peace, security and counter Russian aggression," Degnan said.

She stated that over the past 30 years, the United States has provided more than six billion dollars in aid to Georgia.

Degnan stated that over the past 21 years, the Embassy of the United States had implemented 21 projects worth two million dollars in order to protect the cultural heritage of Georgia, including Gelati monastery complex, Jvari monastery, frescoes of the White Desert and other monuments.

The Georgian opposition says that “attacks against the US and the EU by former GD MPs serve the pro-Russian goals of the party founder, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, who is running the country from the backstage”.
