American medical expert Eric Goldsmith came to the Vivamedi civilian clinic in Tbilisi early on Monday to visit the imprisoned former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, who was transferred to the clinic from Rustavi Prison No.12 on May 12, after being arrested in Tbilisi in October of the last year after eight years in political exile.

Saakashvili's lawyer Shalva Khachapuridze had announced that a Swiss expert would also arrive in Georgia in the next few hours, as well as two other American medical experts in the following days.

Goldsmith is expected to check Saakashvili’s health in the next three days, and make a conclusion, in the wake of the third President’s claims that he needs treatment abroad.

Zurab Chkhaidze, head of the Vivamedi clinic, has expressed hope that actics of Saakashvili's further treatment, as well as other medical issues, “would be agreed upon” with the involvement of foreign experts.

"I hope that the gradation of the condition, the tactics of further treatment and everything will be done with the participation of international experts. Our goal is the recovery and complete rehabilitation of any patient", - said Chkhaidze.

Chkhaidze said that he was ready to provide the court with information about Saakashvili's health.

Saakashvili said he had arrived in Georgia to help the opposition to take office “via elections”, with the current authorities stating that Saakashvili, who currently holds Ukrainian citizenship, attempted a coup with his United National Movement.

The former President said that being on hunger strike for several weeks, following his arrest, “seriously deteriorated his health”.
