Georgian chess legend Gaprindashvili’s lawsuit against Netflix ends with mediation - lawyers

The lawyers of Georgian chess legend Nona Gaprindashvili said on Wednesday that the latter’s defamation lawsuit against Netflix for the Queen's Gambit series has ended with mediation, refusing to disclose additional details.

Gaprindashvili's lawyer Kakha Sharabidze has stated that the settlement initiative came from the US Court of Appeals, and an agreement was reached with Netflix during the mediation process.

The lawyer did not disclose details of the agreement, although he noted that “nothing changes in the film” and that “ the elimination of the circumstances undermining honor and dignity was carried out by the agreement of the parties”.

"This news was preceded by Gaprindashvili’s victory in a California court in which the court did not share any of the defense's arguments, and the judge ruled that a work of art does not constitute a zone free from defamation. This was a precedent that will be important both in this industry and legally. This effort of Mrs. Nona created this precedent in the field of law," said Sharabidze.

Gaprindashvili's lawyer, Maya Mtsariashvili, stated that the main purpose of the lawsuit was to invalidate the false information that was used in the TV series- The Queen's Gambit - about the Georgian chess player.

“After the launch of the dispute, it became known to the whole world through the media that Nona Gaprindashvili is not a Russian, but a Georgian chess player, who was the first grandmaster who also defeated male chess players.

"The party that won the caset and the party that lost the case sat at the negotiation table. We cannot talk about everything, but it is important what was the precondition for the negotiation. All conditions are closed with this mediation, the only thing we can comment on is that we are satisfied with the result in all respects”, said the lawyer.

Gaprindashvili sued Netflix over its Queen’s Gambit series in September 2021.

The series says that its fictional hero Beth Harmon was the only female champion who faced men and that Gaprindashvili was a Russian chess player.

In her lawsuit Gaprindashvili says that by 1968, when the episode was set, she had competed against at least 59 male chess players, including 10 grandmasters.

The suit also says that Netflix described Gaprindashvili as Russian, despite knowing that she was Georgian, ‘and that Georgians had suffered under Russian domination when part of the Soviet Union, and had been bullied and invaded by Russia thereafter.’

Gaprindashvili was demanding five million USD in compensation and the removal of the disputed sections.

Gaprindashvili, 80, is a five time world champion and winner of 11 Olympiads in chess.

Gaprindashvili is also the first woman to be awarded the International Chess Federation title of Grandmaster, which occurred back in 1978.
