Opposition leader Vashadze “sure” ruling party founder Ivanishvili trying “to deal with” imprisoned security official

Head of the Stagey Agmashenebeli opposition party, Giorgi Vashadze, said on Wednesday that he trusted the reports that the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Bidzina Ivanishvilli, had sent the party chair Irakli Kobakhidze, in prison to “deal with” the currently imprisoned former deputy head of the country’s State Security Service, Soso Gogashvili.

Gogashvili, who was arrested in July on several charges, had accused the Georgian Dream authorities of “collaborating with the Russian intelligence”, rigging elections and several other alleged offenses, which the Georgian Dream officials had called “absurd”.

"I am sure it would have been like that. You see how much information we have received [from Gogashvili]. Ivanishvili would have paid for it all with the hands of Kobakhidze, but if it had not happened, a lot more information will be made public”, Vashadze said.

Gogashvili was arrested on July 16 in his home on three charges. The investigation accuses him of tampering with personal data, exceeding his authority and illegal acquisition and storage of firearms.

Gogashvili and his family members claim that during the arrest the former official was ill-treated,and that arms and files were planted on him.

The  former official claims he was  arrested on “political grounds”.
