Parliamentary Investigative Commission can interrogate Ivanishvili - opposition member

The Parliamentary Investigative Commission can interrogate even the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Bidzina Ivanishvili. If he refuses to answer recent questions on the Georgian Dream officials' alleged contacts with Russia through his involvement, it will be a crime, a member of the Political Council of Strategy Agmashenebeli opposition party, Sergo Chikhladze told Front News on Thursday.

He suggested that the required number of opposition MPs have already agreed to propose the setting up of the commission, which, if created, will look into the recent allegations of the imprisoned former security official Soso Gogashvili towards the current authorities, that the GD officials “are cooperating with the Russian intelligence” and were involved in rigging elections in the county.

"This is the first time when almost all opposition parties agree and the creation of the commission. This shows the importance of the issue. When the government is called pro-Russian and it is noticed in such actions, and even more so the representatives of the law enforcement agencies speak with concrete facts, it is in everyone's interest to investigate this. First of all, the Georgian Dream should be interested in this to dispel doubts.

“It is important to create this commission in order to actually determine the relationship between the Georgian high-ranking officials and the high-ranking officials of the Russian intelligence and law-enforcement agencies”, said the opposition member.

Chikhladze stated that “we are talking about very serious crimes. We are talking about the planning of circumvention of international sanctions imposed on Russia. Iit is very important to create a parliamentary investigative commission, which has high legitimacy”, said the opposition politician.

He suggested that preventing the creation of the commision was unlawful.

"It is already a crime when [the head of GD Irakli] Kobakhidze says that we will not create this commission. What leverage do they have to prevent us from creating it when 50 opposition MPs vote to create a commission? Does this mean that he should break the law, close the doors of the hall, and not allow parliamentarians to enter?" Chikhladze said.
