European Commission officially presents 10th package of sanctions on Russia

The European Commission on Wednesday officially proposed the tenth package of sanctions on Russia for its ongoing invasion of Ukraine to the member states.

Ursula von der Leyen, the Commision chair, said Russian president Vladimir Putin was not only waging a “brutal war”, but also attacked civilians, “and he must pay for it”.

"First, we propose further export bans worth more than 11 billion euros to deprive the Russian economy of critical technologies and manufactured goods.Second, we will continue to restrict exports of dual-use goods and advanced technologies. We offer export controls on 47 components that can be used in Russian weapon systems, including drones, missiles, helicopters," she said.

For the first time in history, the EU has decided to add third country structures that Russia uses to circumvent sanctions. Seven Iranian organizations have been added to the sanctions list.

“The European Union is ready to continue imposing sanctions against countries that supply Russia with important technologies”, said the EU official.

“In addition, the EU  imposes sanctions against the Russian propaganda machine. The European Commission proposes to include Putin's propagandists along with Russian political and military leaders in the list of sanctions. The list includes more than 100 new names” she added.
