Kaladze claims his comment “if EU refuses to grant Georgia candidacy won’t be a problem”, not anti-western

Kakha Kaladze, the secretary general of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Tuesday said his latest comment that “if the EU gives Georgia a candidate status, it will be good, but if it refuses, will not be a problem”, was not anti-western.

In comments to the media over the opposition rally at his office on Tuesday protesting his comments made the previous day, Kaladze also said he had never made anti-western comments, and slammed the United National Movement opposition party as ‘destructive and anti-western" force.

“The UNM has nothing to do with democracy, pro-westernism. It is a criminal organization, and by its actions while in office it clearly demonstrated this”, Kaladze said.

He also added the government expected all recommendations outlined by the EU in June to grant the country its membership candidate status would be fulfilled by the end of July.

The bloc is scheduled to decide on Georgia’s candidacy by the end of this year, following Tbilisi’s formal application for membership in March 2022.
