President denounces winter evictions, calls for respect of human rights, European values

President Salome Zourabichvili on Tuesday took to social media to condemn the eviction process of the Khatiashvili family from Kekelidze Street in Tbilisi, asserting that such actions go against the principles upheld by European countries.

In a statement, she emphasized the inappropriateness of evicting individuals during the winter season, stressing the importance of respecting human rights and European values.

Zourabichvili expressed her disapproval of the eviction's timing, highlighting the damage caused to the family's property and the affront to their dignity. She also criticized the “encouragement” of individual debtors.

The National Enforcement Bureau was responsible for carrying out the eviction, involving the use of special tools to open the entrance iron door of the building. This sparked a confrontation between citizens, activists, and bureau representatives who rallied in support of the Khatiashvili family. Subsequently, several individuals were reportedly arrested during the altercation.

The domestic Social Justice Center has indicated that the Khatiashvili family was willing to settle their main financial debt, but currently lacked the means to do so at this stage.
