Baerbock: Georgian Government blocking Its people’s European dream

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Monday expressed her disappointment with the Georgian government for obstructing the country's aspirations to join the European Union. Speaking before the start of the European Council, Baerbock emphasized the frustration of the Georgian populace, particularly the youth and women, who she said were determined to secure EU membership for Georgia.

“It is incredibly painful for me that the Georgian government is blocking this great dream of its own people. The dream of Georgia joining the European Union is being hindered by a law [foreign influence bill ] that the European Council has deemed incompatible with European values,” Baerbock stated.

She criticized the Georgian government for opposing the will of its citizens, who have repeatedly taken to the streets in protest. Baerbock highlighted the contradiction between the government's actions and the European aspirations of the Georgian people.

“We, as member states of the European Union, have affirmed Georgia's European perspective and extended our support. However, the European path requires not only the desire of the population but also the cooperation of the government. The President of Georgia’s refusal to sign the law and the ongoing public demonstrations underscore the widespread opposition to this legislation,” Baerbock added.

She concluded by warning that obstructing Georgia’s European path would only serve to benefit Putin, stressing the importance of aligning with European values to fulfill the Georgian people's aspirations.
