Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has defended the political role of Georgian Dream founder Bidzina Ivanishvili, saying his views often prevail during discussions within the ruling party because of what he described as the former PM’s "exceptional competence".

Speaking at a government briefing on Tuesday, Kobakhidze rejected allegations that Ivanishvili exercises informal control over the government, insisting that Georgia's cabinet governs in accordance with the powers granted to it under the constitution.

According to the prime minister, Ivanishvili influences government decisions only within the scope of his role as honorary chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party and does not interfere in day-to-day government management or personnel appointments.

At the same time, Kobakhidze acknowledged that he regularly seeks Ivanishvili's advice on matters of strategic importance to the country.

"As prime minister and the second-ranking figure in the ruling party, I often make use of his advice when it comes to issues of key importance for the country. His advice is always invaluable," Kobakhidze said.

He added that meetings of the party's leadership are held periodically with Ivanishvili, during which major political issues are discussed.

Kobakhidze said differing opinions are openly debated within the ruling team and argued that Ivanishvili respects alternative viewpoints. However, he noted that Ivanishvili's position frequently wins support during such discussions.

"Most often, Bidzina Ivanishvili's opinion prevails during these open, in-depth and substantive discussions, which is once again a result of his exceptional competence," the prime minister said.

Kobakhidze also praised Ivanishvili's political record, saying he had never used public office for personal gain and had instead sacrificed personal interests in defence of Georgia's national interests.

The prime minister further credited Ivanishvili's return to active politics in late 2023 with strengthening anti-corruption efforts, arguing that corruption at the highest levels of government has since been eliminated.
