Marine Le Pen party’s victory can negatively impact Georgia, warns international relations expert Nika Chitadze

Front News: What will happen if Marine Le Pen’s party wins in France? What will change directly for France and generally abroad?

Nika Chitadze: In the event of a victory by the far-right forces in France, there will likely be lobbying for a partial reduction of aid to Ukraine.
There are allegations that Marine Le Pen has received financial support from Russia. Additionally, her party may push for stricter immigration policies in France, which could lead to public demonstrations and protests.

Although the French president will remain in office, his power will be relatively limited. Previously, cohabitation between different political factions was possible, but with the far-right in power, it will be very difficult. This, in turn, could cause a state crisis in France.

Front News: What will the victory of Marine Le Pen’s party mean for Georgia?

Nika Chitadze: Her victory would have a negative impact on our country, as France would likely oppose EU expansion. France is currently involved in various projects in Georgia, and support for these programs might be reduced.

Furthermore, the transatlantic alliance – relations between the US and the European Union – would suffer, giving Russia an advantage in the democratic world of the West. This discord would naturally go against the national interests of Georgia, making it a very negative factor from both a geopolitical and economic perspective.

Front News: In your opinion, why does the far-right party National Rally have such support from citizens?

Nika Chitadze: Le Pen has garnered support because many locals are dissatisfied with the influx of migrants, who are often involved in illegal activities, including terrorism and criminal groups. Migrants also represent cheap labour, which negatively impacts the local French workforce by reducing job opportunities. This situation frustrates the local population, leading them to seek change. Marine Le Pen’s far-right policies, which emphasise national revival, appeal to many French citizens.

Front News: Do you rule out the possibility that French citizens want to end the war in Ukraine or stop funding it and are looking for a force that will influence this war in any way?

Nika Chitadze: I agree that this is a possibility. However, Marine Le Pen’s father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, whose policies she continues, received significant support from citizens even before the war in Ukraine. Thus, Le Pen’s policies were acceptable to some citizens even before the conflict. While the Ukrainian factor does play a role, it is not the decisive reason for her support.
