During the 62nd round of the Geneva International Discussions, Levan Mgaloblishvili, head of the government of Abkhazia’s Autonomous Republic, reported that representatives of the occupying regime walked out of the meeting as anticipated. Mgaloblishvili confirmed, however, that critical issues were addressed before their exit, including illegal detentions and ongoing “borderization” on occupied territories.
The Georgian delegation emphasized the urgent need for Russia to uphold the EU-mediated ceasefire agreement signed on August 12, 2008, and underscored the right of internally displaced persons and refugees to return to their homes—central agenda items in the Geneva talks.
Mgaloblishvili said the occupying regime’s representatives proposed replacing the Geneva format with the Minsk format, an idea that the Georgian side firmly rejected.
“I am confident that soon, together with our allies, we will ensure that all six points of the peace plan are fulfilled in a way that respects the rights of the Georgian people and our displaced citizens,” he said.
The 62nd round of the Geneva International Discussions took place on November 5-6, 2024.
