Georgia’s currently Russian-occupied de facto Abkhazia has recalled a controversial bill proposing the construction of up to 10,000 apartments, following widespread local protests and demonstrations.
The bill, which aimed to facilitate mass construction of apartments and condominiums in the Ochamchire, Tkvarcheli, and Gali districts, sparked significant opposition among local residents.
According to Echo Kavkaza, the document outlined plans for “substantial development” in the eastern part of occupied Abkhazia.
However, the bill’s introduction met with immediate backlash, leading to tensions and unrest within the community.
The press service of the de facto Parliament on Thursday announced that the decision to recall the bill was made “to relieve tension and maintain stability.”
Many residents in Abkhazia have voiced strong opposition to the bill, referring to it as the “anti-people law on apartments.” They fear that its adoption would legalize the buying and selling of land, paving the way for a new phase of foreign settlement and colonization, particularly by Russian interests.
