Georgia’s Public Defender has responded to the tragic death of a 16-year-old boy near Rike Docks in Tbilisi, calling for a prompt and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement released on January 29, the Ombudsman’s office expressed deep sorrow over the teenager’s passing, describing the event as “a tragedy for the entire society.” The office pledged to examine all aspects of the case, including preventive and responsive measures taken by relevant authorities, as well as the criminal investigation process.
The tragedy unfolded on January 25, when a group of teenagers reportedly entered the restricted area of Rike Docks. According to local media, one of them fell into accumulated water and drowned. However, the incident only became public knowledge several days later.
In response to speculation, Tbilisi City Hall clarified that the accident occurred on private property, refuting claims that the teenager had fallen into an open ditch within Rike Park.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched an investigation under Article 115 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to incitement to suicide—a legal classification often used in cases of unexplained deaths.
The Ombudsman’s office has vowed to closely monitor the investigation and take all necessary actions to ensure accountability and justice for the victim and his family.
