OSCE representative calls for ‘immediate release’ of journalist Mzia Amaglobeli

The OSCE Representative on Media Freedom, Teresa Ribeiro, has issued a strong statement urging the immediate release of Georgian journalist and media founder Mzia Amaglobeli, citing serious concerns over her health condition.

“I urge for the immediate release of journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, whose health condition is a cause of great concern,” Ribeiro stated on X (formerly Twitter). “I reiterate that the Government of Georgia should unconditionally release all journalists who have been arbitrarily arrested or detained.”

Ribeiro also called for accountability in cases of violence against journalists covering demonstrations, emphasizing that those responsible must be investigated and held accountable in line with the OSCE Ministerial Council Decision 3/18 on the Safety of Journalists.

Mzia Amaglobeli has been held in pre-trial detention since January 12, 2025, after being accused of assaulting a police officer. Human rights organizations and press freedom advocates have labeled the charges as politically motivated, pointing to the journalist’s critical reporting on government policies and alleged abuses.
