Shalva Papuashvili, the Georgian Parliament Speaker, on Wednesday is set to participate in the NATO-Georgia Commission meeting in Brussels to discuss Tbilisi’s integration prospects into the bloc.
Speaking for the press, Papuashvili said he would address the Commission, with the agenda also including discussions with Mircea Geoană, the Deputy Secretary General of NATO.
He further noted NATO meetings would review the security environment in the South Caucasus, with a focus on Georgia and its security challenges.
“I anticipate a highly engaging discussion”, Papuashvili said, and stressed the visit marked “another opportunity for him after January 2022 to get involved in the Commission’s meeting.
The official noted his last year’s trip came before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and added “after a year and a half, we will discuss how Georgia had navigated through that period, maintaining the security environment to ensure the safety of our citizens and a secure corridor for NATO, bridging Europe and Asia.”
The Georgian delegation, which also includes Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Georgian Parliament, Irakli Beraia, the head of the Defence and Security Committee and MP Ketevan Turazashvili, will conclude the visit on Thursday.
