Penitentiary Service denies allegations of mistreatment of detained protester Nikoloz Katsia

The Special Penitentiary Service of Georgia has issued a statement responding to allegations circulating in certain media outlets, claiming that Nikoloz Katsia, a detained protester, has been denied access to food.

The service dismissed the reports as misinformation, asserting that Katsia has been provided with adequate food and hygiene standards.

“We want to clarify to the public that the accused, N.K., is fully provided with food and all necessary hygiene conditions. Any claims about violations of his rights are false and aim to mislead the public and discredit the Penitentiary Service,” the statement read.

The service emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the rights of all detainees and inmates, calling such accusations baseless.

“We urge those spreading misinformation to refrain from disseminating unverified and false information,” it added.

The statement follows reports suggesting that Katsia’s access to food has been restricted and that funds deposited to his account are allegedly being used by his cellmate. The Penitentiary Service has denied these claims, reiterating its dedication to ensuring detainees’ rights and well-being.
