On December 6, Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nausėda stated during a press conference that the Presidents of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Poland are considering a visit to Georgia in December. This visit would focus on the ongoing political developments in the country, especially regarding Georgia’s recent decision to suspend EU membership negotiations.
President Nausėda also expressed strong support for the imposition of EU sanctions against Georgia, emphasizing the importance of a unified stance among European countries on steps to take regarding Georgia. He noted that greater unity within the EU would allow for more effective policy implementation, particularly concerning Georgia’s path to EU integration.
“I support the imposition of sanctions on a European level. The more unified we are in our approach to Georgia, the more effectively we will be able to shape European politics. However, if the EU announces sanctions but fails to implement them, it would undermine credibility, and we certainly do not want that,” Nausėda remarked. He further added that he was prepared to bring up this issue at the next meeting of the European Union Council.
