Revaz Nadaraia has been elected as the new Chairperson of Georgia’s Constitutional Court, the court’s press service confirmed. The election took place during a closed session through a secret ballot, and the number of votes in favor of his appointment has not been disclosed.
Nadaraia joined the nine-member Constitutional Court on April 8, filling a seat under the Supreme Court’s quota following the early resignation of Judge Shota Kikilashvili. Just days later, the term of the previous Chairperson, Merab Turava, expired on March 30 after completing a 10-year tenure. While the Georgian Parliament lacked the votes needed to appoint Turava’s replacement (requiring a 3/5 majority), Nadaraia’s appointment was secured by the Supreme Court.
The Chairperson of the Constitutional Court serves a five-year term, while judges serve ten years. The Court is composed of nine judges—three appointed by the President, three by Parliament, and three by the Supreme Court.
Revaz Nadaraia has a long judicial career that began during the previous government’s rule. His roles have included judge and chair at both the Poti and Tbilisi city courts, as well as serving on the Tbilisi Court of Appeals in both criminal and civil chambers. He was also a member of Georgia’s High Council of Justice and the Prosecutorial Council. From July 2021 until March 2025, he held a permanent judgeship at the Supreme Court.
