Ruling party fails to impeach President

The ruling Georgian Dream party on Wednesday failed to impeach President Salome Zourabichvili following the Constitutional Court’s ruling on Monday which backed the vote for the President’s unauthorized EU trip last month.

After the boycott of two opposition groups – the United National Movement and the Strategy Agmashenebeli – only 86 MPs voted for the impeachment, while the party required at least 100 votes to dismiss Zourabichvili.

In her speech at the legislative body before the vote, the President accused the ruling party of “impeaching” the country’s European future, while the GD blamed the President for “systemic violation” of the country’s main law and “threatening” its EU future.

The vote came prior to the EU decision on Georgia’s membership candidacy status in December.
