Ruling party MP questions effectiveness of sanctions against Ivanishvili

Nino Tsilosani, the Vice-Speaker of the Parliament, expressed skepticism on Monday about potential imposing sanctions as an “effective tool” in addressing issues related to Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honorary chair and the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, claiming, “the homeland comes first.”

Tsilosani commented on a report from Voice of America regarding potential sanctions on Ivanishvili, describing it as “to some extent a behind-the-scenes rumor” that should not be the subject of speculation.

She emphasized that whether through financial sanctions or visa restrictions, “it is clear how Ivanishvili would respond”. “Since announcing her entry into Georgian politics, Bidzina Ivanishvili has worked tirelessly to safeguard the country from war, disorder, and statelessness,” Tsilosani claimed.

She noted that Ivanishvili “has consistently prioritized the nation over personal interests, enduring ongoing attacks, stress, and condemnation since entering politics”.

Voice of America reports, citing sources, that the United States has developed a sanctions package targeting Ivanishvili, which may be implemented soon.
