Ruling party’s “alignment” with Chinese Communist party “alarming” – opposition MPs

Georgian opposition MPs on Monday slammed the ongoing visit of the ruling Georgian Dream party in China, calling the ruling power’s alleged “alignment” with the Chinese Communist party “alarming”.

“When the ruling party aligns exclusively with the Communist Party of China, it poses a significant risk,” opposition MP Khatia Dekanoidze said.

“While we have maintained economic ties with China for an extended period, the primary concern in the European Commission’s recommendation is the alignment of foreign policy with the European Union. Georgia’s international partners should encompass the United States, EU member states, and NATO, all of whom advocate for Georgia’s future membership in the EU”, the lawmaker said.

Tina Bokuchava, chairperson of the United National Movement parliamentary faction, also expressed concerns, stating, “while financial and economic relations with China are crucial – acknowledged globally – politically replacing the West with China is highly detrimental to our country. The ongoing political visit and the Georgian government’s attempt to draw closer to the Chinese Communist Party are particularly harmful as Georgia aspires to align itself with Europe.”

The delegation from the Georgian Dream, led by Irakli Kobakhidze, is currently on a one-week visit to China, pointing to “crucial importance” of intensified bilateral relations after signing a strategic partnership deal with the country last year.
