Russia’s Patrushev echos Georgian ruling party’s narrative on 2008 War, blames US for escalation

Former Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev has reiterated the Georgian Dream ruling party’s narrative on the August 2008 war, referring to it as “Mikheil Saakashvili’s military adventure,” which he claimed was orchestrated by the United States.

Patrushev claimed “lies and provocations accompany the policies of Washington and Western countries. In August 2008, Saakashvili’s military adventure was organized by the Americans, although they claimed they had nothing to do with it”.

Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, also echoed this sentiment by quoting the Georgian Dream party while discussing the August war.

Echo Kavkaza reported Polyansky had cited a recent statement from the ruling party accusing Saakashvili of initiating the conflict. The GD statement this month had emphasized the former President’s “adventurous actions were not the result of his mental imbalance, but the result of betrayal ordered from outside and well planned.”
