Russian missile attack on Kyiv kills 34, including five children, injures 121

Russia’s July 8 attack on Kyiv claimed the lives of 34 individuals, including five children, and injured 121 people, official data said on Wednesday.

The Emergency Situations Service of Ukraine announced the conclusion of a search-and-rescue operation in Kyiv following the massive Russian missile attack.

The tragic event left extensive damage to civilian infrastructure and resulted in significant casualties. Despite the devastation, rescue teams successfully saved 11 people from the rubble, the agency added.

The Children’s Hospital Okhmatdet in Kyiv was severely affected, with one of its buildings completely destroyed. The city-military administration reported the deaths of a clinic doctor and a relative of a patient. The private medical center Adonis also suffered partial destruction, resulting in nine fatalities.

In the Shevchenko district, the collapse of a residential building’s entrance led to the deaths of 13 residents. An industrial facility in the same area also collapsed, killing two people. Meanwhile, in the Solomensk district, the Domino business center was struck, resulting in seven deaths.

The Ukrainian city of Krivoy Rog was also targeted on July 8, where a rocket attack killed 10 people and injured numerous others.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has denied accusations of targeting civilian structures, including the children’s hospital in Kyiv, attributing the destruction to a missile from the Ukrainian air defense system. However, the Security Service of Ukraine discovered fragments of a Russian cruise missile (Kh-101) at the hospital site and has initiated an investigation under the charge of war crimes.

Daniel Bell, head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission, corroborated Ukraine’s findings on July 9, stating that video recordings and assessments of the impact site indicate that the medical facility was indeed struck by a Russian missile.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation and calls for accountability as Ukraine continues to grapple with the ongoing conflict and its devastating impacts on civilian life.
