President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, has called for the resignation of the Prime Minister, accusing him of failing to seek compromise and relying solely on threats against the public. Speaking in an interview with the Georgian Public Broadcaster, she proposed holding elections within two weeks of the Prime Minister’s resignation.
“We can find a solution, and it must be a political one. The Prime Minister, who knows only how to threaten the people and refuses to search for compromise, must step down. Once he resigns, I will announce elections within two weeks,” Zourabichvili stated.
The President also addressed Georgia’s EU candidate status, attributing the achievement to public protests rather than government action. She criticized the ruling party for its failure to fulfill EU recommendations and its subsequent shift toward anti-Western rhetoric.
“Let’s be honest: Georgia received candidate status thanks to the protests against the ‘Russian law.’ The government made no meaningful steps to meet the EU recommendations. Instead, from February onwards, they have pushed anti-Western and anti-American rhetoric, culminating in attempts to pass the ‘Russian law,'” she said.
Zourabichvili emphasized that the country is in a deep political crisis stemming from two issues: elections not reflecting the public will and the Prime Minister’s decisions going against the majority. “This is a crisis of democracy, and we must act to preserve Georgia’s democratic and free future,” she concluded.
