Police detained six people on Rustaveli Avenue late on Monday as pro-European protests in the Georgian capital entered their 75th consecutive day. Interior Ministry officers once again intervened to prevent demonstrators from blocking the main square.
Among those detained was Levan Gogichaishvili, a member of the opposition party Gakharia for Georgia. He and another individual were later released after signing a document. The protests, now in their 76th day, continue to demand new elections and the release of those arrested during previous demonstrations.
The demonstrations were sparked by the Georgian Dream party’s decision on November 28, 2024, to exclude the issue of opening accession negotiations with the European Union from the national agenda for the next four years. Protesters argue that this move undermines Georgia’s European aspirations and democratic future.
In recent weeks, reports of police violence against demonstrators and journalists covering the protests have surfaced. Despite mounting criticism, no officers have been arrested in connection with these incidents.
Authorities have also increased penalties for blocking roads during protests. As of December 30, 2024, fines for participation in such actions have risen from 500 GEL to 5,000 GEL, while organizers now face fines of up to 15,000 GEL.
