In response to questions regarding President Joe Biden’s recent statement on the elections in Georgia, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized that the president’s remarks were straightforward and called for an investigation into the alleged electoral irregularities.
Miller stated that President Biden urged Georgian officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the reported irregularities during the elections. “We have also made it clear that we are consulting with our colleagues in the European Union about what other investigations may be appropriate,” he added.
He noted that President Salome Zourabichvili will address the situation herself and has mentioned having information about electoral violations. “I hope she can provide this information, as it will be relevant to any investigation, whether conducted by Georgian authorities or anyone else,” Miller stated.
Furthermore, Miller reiterated the US commitment to its relationship with Georgia, indicating that it remains under review. “We have made it clear that our relationship with the Georgian government is under review. We have already suspended $95 million in assistance to the Georgian government, and any further assistance remains under review,” he concluded.
