Swedish defense minister visiting Georgia, bilateral ties, regional security, Ukraine on top of agenda

Peter Hultqvist, Swedish defense minister has paid an official visit to Georgia, already meeting with the country’s PM, president and defense minister.

Bilateral cooperation in defense and other fields, regional security and the Russia-Ukraine war were on the top of the agenda of the meetings in Tbilisi.

“Very important to share how Sweden and  Georgia  both view the terrible war in Ukraine, the regional situation, the future of the Black Sea, but also the window of opportunity that is our European integration,” Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has tweeted over the meeting.

The Administration of the Government of Georgia said that 2022 marked the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Kingdom of Sweden “which once again confirms the strong partnership between the two countries.”

Along with regional security and ongoing war in Ukraine, a meeting with the Georgian PM concerned Georgia’s prospects for EU membership, as Georgia has officially applied for this.

Garibashvili said that Georgia appreciates the support of the Kingdom of Sweden for the irreversible process of integration into the European Union and the European reform agenda,” the Administration of the Government of Georgia reported.

Hultqvist, for his part, reaffirmed his country’s support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Swedish and Georgian defense ministers have discussed the security environment created in the region after the Russia-Ukraine war and existing challenges.

The meeting was focused  on Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine, which, according to the parties, “is a gross violation of fundamental principles and norms of international law and is a threat to Euro-Atlantic security.”
