Tbilisi “careful” when it comes to direct military aid to Ukraine – Papuashvili

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Tuesday said Tbilisi was “careful” when it came to direct military aid to Ukraine, pointing to “own security challenges” sparked by the occupation of 20 percent of the country’s territories by Russia.

While in Bucharest, the official also said Tbilisi was “firm” to resolve its conflicts “only peacefully”, and added his Government had acted “in full compliance” with the West’s policies over the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The official also said Georgia had accepted Ukrainian refugees and ensured them with necessary services while having 300,000 IDPs from the Russian-controlled regions.

Papuashvili also stressed “a firm stance of the international society is essential to send a clear message to Russia that the policy directed against sovereignty and territorial integrity of states is not acceptable”, after reaffirming Tbilisi’s “full support” for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He reiterated if the West had “properly reacted” to Russia’s invasion of Georgia in 2008 and did not call Georgian politicians “alarmists”, it would have prevented current developments in Ukraine.
