Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze has accused Western nations of exacerbating political polarization in Georgia, despite their calls for reducing tensions. In response to the OSCE/ODIHR’s pre-election report, Kaladze acknowledged the need to address polarization but argued that Western countries are financially backing efforts that heighten societal divisions.
“The West urges us to reduce polarization, yet they are simultaneously funding initiatives that deepen divisions, polarization, and confrontation within society. This is the reality,” Kaladze remarked.
He praised the OSCE/ODIHR report, calling it an accurate depiction of the current political climate in Georgia. While it underscored the issue of polarization, Kaladze stressed that the Georgian government is dedicated to taking concrete steps to promote unity and resolve the problem.
Kaladze also lauded the peaceful election environment, noting that since 2012, he has not witnessed such a calm and open campaign atmosphere. He pointed out that all political parties have the opportunity to campaign freely, though some face difficulties due to a lack of connection with the public.
“The election environment is excellent, as noted in the report. Some parties struggle to connect with people, but that’s because they lack a clear message,” Kaladze added.
