Tbilisi Mayor demolishes homes of vulnerable families, Social Justice Center head says

On Friday morning, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze oversaw the demolition of 14 homes near Tbilisi Sea, leaving impoverished families, disabled veterans, and children without shelter, according to Tamta Mikeladze, head of the Social Justice Center.

“These were modest houses and makeshift barracks built by poor families trying to survive on municipal land in the city’s periphery,” Mikeladze wrote on social media.

She reminded the public of similar incidents in 2020 and 2022, when Kaladze reportedly evicted low-income families from their homes in the Africa settlement and Ortachala, respectively, leaving them homeless during winter.

Mikeladze also highlighted Kaladze’s ties to construction companies and alleged misuse of municipal land for luxury developments.

“This is hypocrisy and inhumanity. How much longer will we accept this as normal?” she wrote, calling for public accountability for the government and its policies.
