The Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Gharibashvili met with the Vice-President of the European Commission for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Joseph Borrell.

According to the press service of the Prime Minister, during the face-to-face meeting, which was held before the meeting of the EU-Georgia Association Council, all the main directions of the bilateral agenda were discussed. The progress made by the country in terms of economic, political and democratization reforms was noted.

The focus was on the implementation of the Association Agreement, successful cooperation in various fields, geopolitical processes, challenges in the occupied territories and the current political situation.

"It was noted that the government has an ambitious plan, Georgia to make a formal application for full membership in the EU in 2024 and is taking all appropriate steps to prepare the country for it.

The conversation focused on the political processes in the country. The need to conduct the current political processes in a constructive, dialogue mode was underlined. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government's readiness for an ongoing outcome-oriented dialogue with the support of the European Union and expressed hope that the opposition would continue a constructive dialogue.

According to Irakli Gharibashvili, the involvement of Christian Danielson, the Personal Representative of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in the dialogue process indicates the importance of this issue for the European Union.

The meeting focused on the challenges in the occupied territories of Georgia, the detention of Georgian citizens and illegal detention. "The Prime Minister thanked the EU High Representative for his strong support for Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty," the PM said in a statement.
