Trump says US won’t provide security guarantees to Ukraine

US President Donald Trump has indicated that the United States will not provide extensive security guarantees in a potential peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, instead shifting responsibility to European nations.

Speaking at his first cabinet meeting, Trump claimed that negotiations with Russia and Ukraine were progressing “very successfully” and suggested that a ceasefire deal could be near.

“We’re going to make a deal with Russia and Ukraine to stop killing people,” Trump told reporters.

When asked whether the US would offer security guarantees as part of the agreement, Trump responded, “I’m not going to make security guarantees beyond very much … We’re going to have Europe do that, because Europe is the next-door neighbor.”

He also announced plans for the US to work with Ukraine on rare earth minerals, describing the collaboration as beneficial for both countries.

“We very much need rare earth, they have great rare earth,” Trump said. “It’s a great deal for Ukraine too, because they get us over there, we are going to be working over there.”
