The United Kingdom has announced its largest sanctions package against Russia since the start of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The new measures target 107 Russian companies and individuals, further tightening economic pressure on the Kremlin.
According to the UK government, the sanctions aim to cut off key energy revenues that fund Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine. Among the targets are 40 additional oil tankers from Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”, which have transported $5 billion worth of Russian oil and petroleum products in the past six months. This brings the total number of sanctioned Russian oil tankers to 133.
Additionally, the UK is imposing sanctions on 14 new “kleptocrats”, including Roman Trotsenko, one of Russia’s wealthiest individuals with an estimated fortune of £2.2 billion. Many of those sanctioned hold leadership roles in Russia’s strategic economic sectors.
“Three years into Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukrainians continue to defend their country and way of life. They have shown that, with the right support, they can withstand Russian aggression. Today’s actions will strengthen Ukraine’s position at this critical moment in our shared fight for security,” the UK government statement read.
