UNM chair responds to 19th anniversary of Rose revolution

The head of the United National Movement opposition, the party which had run the country for nine years until 2012, has reacted to the 19th anniversary of the Rose Revolution, when the UNM came to power via a peaceful revolution.

“Today is November 23, Saint George day, the day of the victory of light over darkness, the day of faith and the strengthening of this faith and the defeat of evil”, he said.

“Today is the day when people imbued with an idea turned a ruined territory, where there were criminals, corruption and complete hopelessness, into an ambitious state”, Melia added.

He claimed that Georgia was a “role model” for many thanks to the reforms of the previous authorities under currently imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili.  “There was darkness in 2002, and now the government is trying to leave us on the dark side of history. But remember – the longer the night, the closer the dawn. We won with honor and truth, we will win with honor and truth. There is no short or long way to victory, there is only a worthy way and a worthy victory”, he said.

Earlier this week the UNM members called for new inter-party elections to replace Melia.
