European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the significance of Georgia’s upcoming October 26 elections during her meeting with Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, stating that the vote will be a critical test for the country’s democracy.
“Dear President, I greatly respect your commitment to Georgia’s European path. We meet at a crucial moment—the upcoming elections will be a decisive test for Georgia’s democracy and a pivotal moment for the future of EU-Georgia relations,” von der Leyen remarked after the meeting.
Georgian President also addressed the meeting on social media, reaffirming the Georgian people’s dedication to accelerating the country’s European integration.
“I once again confirmed to President Ursula von der Leyen the unwavering commitment of the Georgian people to fast-track our European path. I stressed the vital importance of Europe’s moral support so that the Georgian people do not feel isolated as they declare their European future on October 26,” she wrote.
The meeting underscored the growing importance of the upcoming elections for Georgia’s democratic trajectory and its relationship with the European Union.
