US aiding Ukraine investigate alleged war crimes by Russia

The United States is assisting Ukraine in investigating alleged war crimes committed by the Russian military in the country, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said at a press conference on April 21 in Washington.

He stated that the US is cooperating with the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine and other countries which are also assisting Ukraine.

Garland said that Americans are helping Ukraine in gathering and storing evidence.

In March 2022, US authorities, based on data from intelligence services and other sources, stated that war crimes had been committed by Russia in Ukraine.

Ukraine Prosecutor General Irina Venediktova said in an interview with CNN a few days ago that up to 5,800 cases of war crimes and crimes against humanity are being investigated and more than 500 suspects have been identified.

The Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has been investigating the alleged  war crimes in Ukraine since February 28, 2022.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

Hostilities have been in progress since then.
