US Ambassador to Georgia Robin Dunnigan on Friday emphasized the importance of free and fair elections, saying they “are vital for establishing a government that truly reflects the will of the people”, in a recent presentation of the Electoral Compass Georgia 2024.
The ambassador urged voters to be informed about the candidates and their platforms, highlighting the necessity for transparency in the electoral process.
Dunnigan further remarked, “It is critical that voters know exactly who they are voting for and what their representative or party is going to do for them.” She expressed the US commitment to collaborate with any democratic government elected through an inclusive process.
Dunnigan stressed the “crucial role” of media and civil society in combating disinformation and polarizing rhetoric during election campaigns. “The only way we get the truth and cut through the disinformation is through the media and civil society,” she noted, commending Georgian organizations for their efforts to inform voters.
She reiterated the US position of neutrality, adding, “We do not pick winners and losers. We are happy to work with any democratically elected government that is elected in free and fair inclusive and open elections.”
