The MEGOBARI Act, introduced earlier this year by Representatives Joe Wilson and Steve Cohen, proposes a comprehensive review of US relations with Georgia, including all aid programs. The bill urges the US President to impose sanctions on senior officials of the ruling Georgian Dream party and their enablers for engaging in corruption and steering Georgia away from its Euro-Atlantic path.
The legislation reaffirms support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amid Russia’s ongoing occupation, promotes stronger people-to-people ties and defense cooperation, and pledges support for Georgian civil society. However, it makes future cooperation conditional on Georgia meeting democratic and constitutional standards.
