Congressman Joe Wilson issued a strong statement warning Bidzina Ivanishvili, the leader of Georgia’s ruling party Georgian Dream, against taking actions that could harm Georgia’s democratic processes.
In a post on X, Wilson, a member of the US House of Representatives and a longtime advocate for democracy in Eastern Europe, said:
“President Trump has made it very clear where he stands on the self-professed enemies of America. If Bidzina Ivanishvili goes through with his plan to destroy Georgian democracy on Dec 29, he should expect a response like he’s never imagined.”
Wilson’s comments come amid growing tensions in Georgia as the country prepares for the presidential inauguration on December 29. Opposition leaders and civil society groups have accused Ivanishvili and his party of consolidating power and eroding democratic institutions. Together with thousands of protesters rallying for over a month, they have been requesting early elections and release of the detained activists.
