In a recent statement, US Congressman Joe Wilson condemned Georgian ruling party leader and billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, accusing him of leading Georgia toward authoritarianism with alleged support from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Wilson labeled Ivanishvili a “Russian puppet,” asserting that his influence is steering Georgia away from democratic principles and closer to Moscow’s orbit.
Wilson’s comments, shared on social media, emphasized that he and Speaker Mike Johnson had advocated for sanctions against Ivanishvili since 2020, as outlined in the Republican Study Committee’s (RSC) National Security Strategy. Wilson reiterated his call for the US to impose sanctions on Ivanishvili, asserting that his alleged coordination with the Kremlin is destabilizing Georgia’s political landscape.
“Bidzina Ivanishvili is turning Georgia into a dictatorship, working hand in glove with Putin. The United States must finally sanction him, as Speaker Johnson and I called for in 2020 as part of the RSC National Security Strategy ” Wilson stressed.
