The US Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions on a high-ranking official of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs Zviad Kharazishvili, his deputy Miler Lagazauri, as well as two members of far-right and pro-Russian extremist group Alt-Info—Zurab Makharadze and Konstantine Morgoshia.
The sanctions were introduced in response to actions limiting fundamental freedoms in Georgia, including freedom of expression.
The Treasury statement reads that all property and interests of the sanctioned individuals within the US, or under US control, had been blocked. These assets must be reported to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Additionally, entities owned 50% or more, directly or indirectly, by one or more of the sanctioned individuals are also subject to these restrictions.
