US Under Secretary Uzra Zeya to visit Georgia, Armenia

Deputy Secretary of State Uzra Zeya will visit Georgia and Armenia from July 9-17, the US State Department announced on Wednesday.

As the US Assistant Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, Zeya will engage in discussions on democratic governance, anti-corruption efforts, media freedom, freedom of expression, and the inclusiveness of marginalized and vulnerable groups, the State Department said.

In Georgia, Zeya will meet with government officials, civil society representatives, media members, and parliamentarians. She has been scheduled to address “serious concerns” regarding the Foreign Influence Transparency Law and other “illiberal bills”, as well as the damaging rhetoric of the Georgian government, which the State Department said  threatens Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic trajectory.

Zeya will emphasize that the government’s undemocratic actions and misinformation about the US have harmed the long-term relationship between the two countries, it added.

Zeya will reiterate the US’s unwavering support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlight the commitment of the Georgian people to their Euro-Atlantic aspirations, and acknowledge the assistance provided to Georgia over 32 years of partnership. She will also stress the importance of free and fair elections, a vibrant civil society, respect for fundamental freedoms, protection of marginalized groups, and the human rights of all Georgians.

Additionally, Deputy Secretary Zeya will visit a community organization founded and managed by women who have been internally displaced due to the ongoing Russian occupation in Georgia.
